IN VITROMETABOLISM OF RAT MAMMARY GLAND: RESPIRATION, AEROBIC GLYCOLYSIS AND CARBON DIOXIDE PRODUCTION12

Abstract
O2 consumption, "metabolic'' CO2 production (respiratory quotient calculated), and aerobic glycolysis (apparent) were studied as activity/mg. N of mammary tissue from virgin, pregnant, and post-lactating rats. O2 consumption and CO2 production increased as pregnancy progressed and increased more rapidly following parturition. The latter increased more rapidly than the former, causing R. Q. greater than 1 for lactating tissue. Several very high R. Q. values were observed in tissue from virgin, nonestrous animals. Aerobic glycolysis was low throughout the various physiological states except that upon involution it tended to exceed respiration.
