Abstract
The paper includes (1) an historical discussion of the morphological, physiological and genetical differences between chromosomes; (2) a consideration of theories as to synapsis and segregation, including views of the chief opponents of the chromosome theory of heredity; also certain general questions such as the purpose of synapsis and the necessity for 2 maturation divisions; and (3) a statement of the direct evidence available as shown by (a) structure of tetrads, (b) time of segregation of sex-chromosomes and heteromorphic homologues and (c) genetical data. The conclusion is that the 2 maturation divisions are parts of a unit process and segregation may occur in either.
