Abstract
The efficiency of the polycarbamate membrane filtration technique for detecting S. haematobium eggs in urine [from humans with suspected or confirmed urogenital schistosomiasis] was increased by using a pore size of 14 .mu.m diameter and the suction of a water jet pump. The technique permits filtration of several thousand ml of urine in 1 test. Egg concentrations of 1 egg in > 1000 ml of urine were detected. Viability was assessed after filtration by staining with trypan blue. Data from 118 S. haematobium-positive urine samples of 32 patients suggested that the filtration trypan blue-staining-technique is of high validity in light infection with scanty egg-output.This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
