Grasses on high country dry hygrous yellow-brown earths

Abstract
Fifteen lines in 5 genera (Lolium, Festuca arundinacea, Dactylis glomerata, Phalaris aquatica, P. arudinacea, Bromus catharticus, B. inermis) with 3 lines in each representing a cool-season active, a cool-season-dormant and an intermediate type were tested. Intermediate types seemed to be generally the best. Apanui cocksfoot seemed to be the best plant material, Ryegrasses were initially highly productive but did not hold up well under competitive stress in simulated sward conditions.
