INSTRUCTING PATIENTS IN PHYSIOTHERAPY: AN EXAMPLE USING THREE METHODS

Abstract
Fifty-two patients with rheumatoid arthritis of the hands were instructed in the use of wax baths and hand exercises at home. The most effective method was to instruct the patient once in the Physiotherapy Department. The least effective method was to rely on a handout alone. Many patients were reluctant to attend for a second session of instruction, and those who did grasped no more than those who had attended only once.
