The antiketogenic action of sorbitol

Abstract
The antiketogenic effects of glucose, fructose andpolyols were measured in liver slices of starved rats. Sorbitol and fructose diminish the formation of C14-labelled ketone bodies in liver slices prepared from starved rats and incubated with [C-C14]-palmitate. The production of C14O2 is slightly increased, but the total amount of [C14]palmitate oxidized is diminished. The diminution is partly accounted for by incorporation of C14-iabelled fatty acids into the esterified fatty acids of the slices. The relevance of these results to the theory of polyol antiketogenesis is discussed.
