Interference Effects in the Optical Spectrum of Large Molecules

Abstract
Interference effects between intravalence and extravalence excitations in the optical spectrum of a large molecule are considered. The sharp antiresonances observed in the Rydberg spectrum of the naphthalene molecule are interpreted in terms of configuration interaction between zero‐order Rydberg levels and an inhomogeneously broadened π→π* transition.
