Abstract
The dedicated observer scheme (DOS) for detecting incipient instrument faults by functional redundancy is applied to a simulation of the lateral axis control system of a hydrofoil boat. Observer designs and detection logic are found for which 14 separate instrument faults are detected without false alarms. The scheme is shown to be robust with respect to variations in two significant physical parameters. Keywords
