Abstract
The effect of the local atomic environment on the formation of magnetic moments is studied by a model calculation using an extension of the coherent-potential approximation which includes local-atomic-environment effects. The calculation shows that, depending on the -electron number, the local atomic environment may both enhance as well as decrease the magnetic moment of an atom.
