Introduction

Abstract

This introductory chapter begins with a brief discussion of the conditions of schools in the U.S. and the importance of the school environment. It provides an overview of the subsequent chapters. It then discusses the various themes that recur throughout this book, including children's vulnerability to the effects of hazardous environmental exposure, the importance of a team approach to safe and healthy school environments, the positive influence of involved adults, and the complexity of policymaking.
