To obtain accurate transverse tomograms of the optic canal, we have adapted a special V board to help position the patient correctly and aid him to hold this position. In order to locate an abnormality of the optic canal, and in order to compare one portion of one canal to the corresponding portion of the opposite canal, we recommend a tomographic section interval of 1 mm. Tomography of the optic canals is suggested in patients who have abnormal optic canals on routine roentgenographic studies and also in cases of otherwise unexplained vision loss or vision loss after trauma. We have tomographed the optic canals of 50 patients, 27 of whom had abnormal optic canals.
