Diagnosis-Treatment Relationships in Psychiatry: A Statistical Analysis

Abstract

It is argued that evaluation of the diagnostic classificatory system in psychiatry has concentrated almost entirely on the question of its logical consistency and degree of interjudge agreement and neglected the question of its practical purposes and the extent to which it achieves them. A primary purpose of diagnosis might be thought to be determining treatment decisions.
