The physical interpretation of angular-momentum-dependent optical potentials

Abstract
The authors discuss the physical meaning of the phenomenological l-dependent terms previously found to be necessary to give good fits to a wide range of proton elastic scattering data. They demonstrate that the effects of these terms on the real and imaginary parts of the s matrix are strikingly similar to the effects due to the coupling of pick-up channels. They identify the separate effects of the real and imaginary l-dependent components. Some general interpretations of anomalies revealed by l-dependent analyses are discussed, but further experiments are required to give a full account of these.
