Abstract
A case is reported of a transfusion reaction occurring in an Hr-negative [male] as a result of Hr-positive transfusions. The patient was given Rh-negative blood (2d transfusion) with resultant reaction. Anti-Hr'' conglutinins were demonstrated in a high titer, and a rapid slide testing serum for the Hr factor obtained. As all Rh-neg. blood is Hr-pos., the danger in the use of Rh-neg. blood for Rh-pos. recipients is emphasized. This fact is of importance as the mistaken idea that Rh-neg. blood is non-antigenic has been causing unusual demands on blood banks, with resultant shortages of Rh.-neg. blood for Rh-neg. recipients.
