THE EFFECT OF pH ON THE AVAILABILITY OF p-AMINOBENZOIC ACID TO NEUROSPORA CRASSA

Abstract
The action of pH on the effectiveness of p-aminobenzoic acid alone was studied on N. crassa since it requires an exogenous supply of the vitamin. The effectiveness of p-aminobenzoic acid as a growth factor decreased with an increase in pH. The efficiency of the vitamin in the nutrition of the fungus appeared to be a function of the molecular rather than of the ionic form.
