Abstract
Electron micrographs of aldehyde fixed rhizomorph tips show the spindle apparatus to be a centrally located, cylinder-like bundle of microtubules which extends through the nucleus to opposite poles where they appear to originate from 2 centriole-like bodies located in the cytoplasm. Chromatin is distributed peripherally about the spindle cylinder and the nuclear membrane remains intact except where perforated by the spindle. It is suggested that somatic nuclear division is this species is mitotic and the apparatus is compared with the mitotic apparatus found in members of other fungal groups.
