THE EFFECT OF CALCIUM ON THE ABSORPTION OF POTASSIUM BY BARLEY ROOTS

Abstract
Interrelationships between K and Ca in absorption by barley roots were investigated. A given concn. of Ca exerts both a depressing and a stimulating effect on the absorption of K, and the effects are related to the concn. of K in the external media. The depressing effect has been interpreted as the result of a competition for a metabolically produced binding compound. To explain the stimulating effect, it is necessary to postualte that Ca functions as a co-factor in the utilization of the K complex produced during absorption.
