Abstract
General formulas for the cross section for the -pole excitation (or disintegration) of a nucleus by the electric field of a non-relativistic positively charged projectile have been obtained by using the Born approximation; the finite size of the nucleus has been taken into account. For electric dipole and quadrupole excitation a more accurate evaluation has been made in which the initial and final states of the charged projectile are described by the exact coulomb field wave functions.
