Abstract
The action of Al and Ca was tested on the succinoxidase systems of Smith and Stotz (J. Biol. Chem. 209, 819, 1954), Slater (Biochem. J. 45, 1,1949) and Bonner (Biochem. J. 56, 274, 1954). All 3 preparations were markedly activated by Al (2-5 fold), as well as by Ca (up to 45%). Neither succinic dehydrogenase nor cytochrome oxidase on their own were activated by Al. The effects of Ca and Al were not additive. It was concluded that the activating effect is localized between cytochrome c and succinic dehydrogenase. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
