Developmental Morphology of Allium cepa

Abstract
The embryo, germination, and development and structure of the vegetative parts of pedigreed A. cepa are descr. The primary root is diarch, the adventitious usually pentarch. Both elongate from 2 histogens[long dash]the inner developing the stele and the outer the rest of the root. Adventitious roots originate near the pericyclic region of the stem at the level of its apical meristem. Root-stem transition and vascular development are orthodox. Cortex, stele, and pith are distinct in the stem. Leaves are without a distinct meristem, and consist of a hollow vertical cylindrical sheath and of a blade with a schizogenous cavity. Guard cells arise from the division of a square cell cut off one end of an epidermal cell.
