Excision and Recombination of Adenovirus DNA Fragments in Escherichia coli

Abstract
A hybrid between bacteriophage .lambda. genome and the adenovirus type 2(Ad2) EcoRI-B DNA fragment was constructed in vitro. During growth in E. coli, recombination occurs within multiple adenovirus DNA fragments of the .lambda. vector. This recombination can be intra- or intermolecular. The rapidity of the conversion toward a population in which monomers are predominant suggests that intramolecular recombination is favored. The bacterial recombination system apparently works normally for DNA from a eukaryotic virus.
