A randomized, controlled mammographic screening procedure was initiated in Sweden. The study has been conducted since 1977 in Kopparberg county and since 1978 in Ostergotland county. The planning and organization of the study as well as the method of screening used are described. The results of the 1st 27 mo. in Kopparberg county are presented.
