Abstract
A theory for the quenching of metastable hydrogen by molecular gases is presented. It is shown that the rather large cross sections observed experimentally by Fite et al. can be accounted for by assuming the quenching to be due to the dipole–multipole interaction. Comparison with experiment gives fair agreement. Keywords
