Abstract
The wt. of the adrenals and the conc. of ascorbic acid in the adrenals of the rat were detd. 1 to 56 days after hypophysectomy. A gradual decrease was observed, which, however, did not seem specific for this organ, as the conc. of ascorbic acid in the testis, liver, kidney, and blood serum showed a similar decrease. Starvation of normal rats for 6 days reduced the ascorbic acid in the liver and kidney to a greater degree than in the adrenal, testis, or blood serum. Analysis of the adrenals of normal and hypophysectomized [female] rats showed values for ascorbic acid which were similar to those in [male][male]. The conc. of ascorbic acid in the adrenals of hypophysectomized rate was increased by treatment with suitable pituitary extracts.
