Hyperfine Structure in Trivalent Plutonium

Abstract
The hyperfine structure constants of Pu3+ in CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2 are analyzed and the values 1r3=7.57±0.57 a.u. and acPu3+=(556±42) (gJ1)(μNI) Mc/sec are derived. Relativistic Dirac-Slater and Dirac-Fock wave functions give a value for 1r3 about 9% lower than the empirical value. The core-polarization effect in the actinide ion Pu3+ is much larger than in the lanthanide series.
