New Phase Boundary for Cerium

Abstract

The phase boundary for the high-pressure superconducting ${\alpha }^{\prime }$ phase of cerium has been determined from 77 to 480°K from observations of the resistance anomaly which occurs at the $\alpha \to {\alpha }^{\prime }$ transition. The observed transition pressure at 297°K is 55.8±0.5 kbar, varying linearly with temperature with $\frac{\partial P}{\partial T=-34.9\mathrm{}}$ bar/deg. The change in the electronic properties of cerium as a function of pressure is discussed.
