Abstract
The origin of giant resonance effects in the electron-impact ionization of heavy (Z>50) atoms and ions is discussed in terms of the potentials governing the scattering states. Calculations are presented for electron-impact ionization of the 4d subshell in Xe, , , , and , and for ionization of the 4f subshell in , , , , and . .AE
