Abstract
The content of provitamin in the sterols of the invertebrates is considerably higher than in the mammalia. The provit. in the sterols of Lumbricus terrestris (22.8%) and Arion empiricorum (19-25%) is identical with ergosterol; the same is probably true for Helix pomatia (19-25%). Arion empiricorum is able to store the provit. for over half a yr. The provit. in Buccinum undatum (17-27%) is not ergosterol (as in the other mollusca), but was identified as 7-dehydro-cholesterol. This may be due to the different living conditions of the snail.
