Using data obtained from the proper motion survey done on plates taken with the 48-in. Palomar–Schmidt telescope, a new determination of the luminosity function has been made. This is found to be slightly skew, with a maximum indicated at absolute magnitude +15.7 (photographic). The total number of stars nearer than ten parsecs is found to be 556, and the mass represented by these as 0.064 solar mass per cubic parsec.
