Standards of Reading: a Critical Review of Some Recent Studies

Abstract

Six studies of the reading standards of British school children are critically reviewed, special attention being paid to the statistical analysis and evaluation of results. No justification was found for a belief that standards are declining, and the implementation of further periodic, regional surveys is suggested.
