Correction of Anemia Following Hypophysectomy by Administration of Cobalt.

Abstract

The anemia of hypophysectomy was corrected by the admn. of Co. The increase in total circulating red cell volume and total circulating hemoglobin was of the same magnitude as that reported in normal rats injd. with Co. It has been reported in several papers that hypophysectomy interferes with the normal erythropoietic response to environments of reduced O2 tension. Apparently the hypophysis is not necessary for a normal erythropoietic response from Co. In this way the mechanisms responsible in each case appear to differ.
