The Adolescent With Cancer: Theoretical, Clinical and Research Issues

Abstract
An attempt is made to relate the effects of cancer to a model of normal adolescent development. The disease and its treatment are seen as affecting the adolescent's sense of autonomy and control, consistency of self-image, and orientation toward the future. Therapeutic approaches aimed at minimising psychological distress in these patients are suggested and the dearth of objective research in this area is noted. Areas of research, including studies of the relationship between prior coping styles within individuals and families and subsequent adjustment, and rliniral investigations of behavioral methodologies aimed at minimizing pain and nausea, are suggested.
