The diagnosis of wound infection is problematic in clinical practice. Traditional signs of redness, heat, localised oedema and pain may in fact be part of a prolonged inflammatory phase. Misdiagnosis, followed by inappropriate use of antibiotics, may lead to an increase in resistant bacteria.
