Abstract
Thyroid uptake of I131 was increased during estrus. Administration of estrogen for short periods of time to intact female and male, castrate male and hypophysectomized female rats induced increased I131 up-take by the thyroid. The thyroid response was independent of dose of estrogen over short periods of time. Prolonged injection of estrogen prevented increased uptake of I131 or depressed its usual uptake. Administration of estrogen did not affect thyroid weight. The precise site of action of estrogen was not determined but its effect was not mediated by the pituitary.Keywords
