COMPARISON BETWEEN LUMINOL- AND LUCIGENINDEPENDENT CHEMILUMINESCENCE OF POLYMORPHONUCLEAR LEUKOCYTES

Abstract
Phorbolmyristate acetate (PMA) induced both a luminol- and a lucigenin-dependent chemiluminescence response in normal polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL). PMNL isolated from a patient with a myeloperoxidase (MPO)-deficiency produced almost no luminol-dependent chemiluminescence. The lucigenin-dependent chemiluminescence response did not differ between normal and MPO-deficient cells. Thus, luminol- and lucigenin-dependent chemiluminescence differ in their dependence on MPO. Results obtained with cell-free MPO-H2O2- and superoxide anion-producing systems further supported this conclusion.
