The Inhibitory Effect of the Sugars on Saponin Haemolysis

Abstract
In general, sugars inhibit saponin haemolysis. By Ponder''s technique the inhibition is measured in glucose, mannose, lactose, sucrose, trehalose, maltose, ramnose, arabinose, xylose, and rhamnose. All are inhibitory except arabinose and xylose, which are inert. The inhibition is analyzed in the commoner sugars, and appears to be similar to the inhibition produced by certain amino-acids and alkalis, i. e., an inhibition brought about mainly by an effect on the cells, and represented by a linear expression.
