Abstract
Although the uptake of glucose by S. quadricauda is dependent upon the provision of energy, there is no direct correlation between the rate of respiration and the rate of uptake. By the use of enzyme inhibitors it has been shown that glucose uptake is dependent upon the provision of adenosine triphosphate, and that the site of absorption is the outside of the plasma membrane. The suggested explanation of the results is that the primary absorption mechanism is a hexokinase system situated on the outside of the plasma membrane, linked with a system which regenerates adenosine triphosphate.
