Evidence of lake acidification by a novel biological pH‐meter

Abstract
Previous and present acidification of dilute lakes can be documented by means of a cladoceran‐pH‐meter (cladocerans are crustaceans) in undisturbed sediment cores. In Grder to construct this biological pH‐meter, chydorid (special cladocerans) remains of S lakes of pH values from 3.6 to 6.7 were analysed according to both, species composition and acid sensitive groups. A highly significant correlation was found between the population structures (= index X) and representative lake water pH values.
