Effect of Scurvy on Hexokinase Activity of Tissues of Guinea Pigs

Abstract
Hexokinase activity of the liver, muscle, pancreas and kidney of both scorbutic and pair fed, normal guinea pigs was determined. A significant decrease in the hexokinase activity of the liver and skeletal muscle was observed in scorbutic guinea pigs. No change in the hexokinase activity was observed in the pancreas while the same in the kidney was considerably increased during scurvy. The diminished insulin formation in the scorbutic guinea pigs might be responsible for the decreased hexokinase activity in the muscle and liver in scurvy.
