Ferroelectric liquid crystals part I. The synthesis and liquid crystal transition temperatures of some new smectic c materials

Abstract
The synthesis and liquid crystal properties of a new class of compounds incorporating a trans-1,4-disubstituted cyclohexane ring are reported. The novel compounds exhibit a variety of mesophases including a smectic C and a smectic A phase. The influence of lateral substituents, various central linking units, optically active centres and chain lengths on the nature and temperature range of the liquid crystal transition temperatures has been investigated systematically.
