Gastric Secretion in Heidenhain Pouches Following Section of Vagus Nerves to Main Stomach

Abstract
Total quantitative collections of the secretion from Heidenhain pouches were made for 30 days. The vagus nerves to the main stomach were sectioned and after 2 weeks, collections were resumed for 30 days. The Heidenhain pouch total HC1 output increased by 196% (avg.) following the vagus section. Ba radiographic studies showed that the emptying time of the main stomach was prolonged by the vagus section. Gastrin production in the antral mucosa is probably increased following vagus section because decreased motility allows ingested food to remain in contact with the antral mucosa longer than before vagus section.
