STUDIES ON THE RATES OF ABSORPTION OF WATER AND SALTS FROM THE ILEUM OF THE DOG

Abstract
Great constancy in results may be obtained by proper technique in absorption expts. on Thiry-Vella loops in trained dogs. The rate of vol. decrease is constant for a time after insertion of an isotonic mixture of NaCl and Na2SO4. The chloride clearance rate (no. of cc. of fluid, the chloride in which is removed from the gut, per min.) increases with increasing sulfate conc. over a range in which the net rate of fluid absorption is nearly constant. In each instance the net effect is removal of a hypertonic soln. from gut to blood. The observations cannot readily be explained except by the assumption of entry of hypotonic fluid coincidently with salt absorption.
