Abstract
The fluorescent antibody method has been studied for use in identifying Cryptococcus neoformans. Of 96 strains of C. neoformans and C. neoformans var. innocuous tested, 95 reacted regardless of the amount of capsule present. The single strain that did not react consistently was Evans C (his strain No. 19). No cross reactions were observed when C. neoformans antiserum was tested against 23 species of heterologous yeasts, nor was there any cross reaction noted when C. neoformans was stained with antiserum for other mycotic agents. Fixation by various means did not affect the staining reaction. Keywords
