Studies on sulphatases. 14. A preliminary account of the chondrosulphatase of Proteus vulgaris

Abstract
A number of bacteria were examined for the presence of chondrosulfatase activity. P. vulgaris, N.C.T.C. no. 4636, contained appreciable amounts of the enzyme and was selected for further study. Concentrates of the chondrosulfatase were prepared and a preliminary study of its properties made. Such concentrates possess mucopoly-saccharase activity which it has not been possible to remove. The chondrosulfatase did not attack a number of other carbohydrate sulfate esters or esters which are known to be substrates for other types of sulfatases.
