Abstract
The stability of bands in external fields is described by means of a spectral-density operator. It is shown that unlike the conventional density of states that behaves discontinuously in the presence of external fields, the spectral-density operator is a continuous function of the perturbation parameter. The behavior of the spectral density is in agreement with the experimental results on the stability of bands in external electric and magnetic fields.
