THE EXISTENCE OF TWO CHROMATOPHORE HORMONES IN THE PITUITARY GLAND

Abstract

Investigations on the dog pituitary gland show that there exist at least two chromatophore hormones in the mammalian pituitary gland, one in the anterior and one in the posterior + intermediate lobes. The two hormones were separable by paper chromatography or separate extraction of the pituitary lobes. The concentration of anterior hormone was reduced by treatment with cortisol whereas that of the posterior hormone was not easily depressed. The authors proposed the names melanophore hormone, intermedin and chromatophorotropic factor of ACTH for the posterior, intermediate and anterior chromatophore hormones respectively.
