The Activity of Streptomycin in the Presence of Serum and Whole Blood.

Abstract
The activity of streptomycin was not changed in the presence of fresh whole blood or serum when tested with a sensitive strain of Staphylococcus aureus. No enhancement of streptomycin activity was noted even when immune serum was added to the blood. Growth of a resistant strain of S. aureus was inhibited during the first 24 hrs. by streptomycin in concs. far < inhibitory cones., and this effect was augmented when serum or blood was present. Growth curves indicated that this inhibition was a direct interference with bacterial metabolism rather than combination with or inactivation of labile constituents in the medium. The bactericidal and bac-teriostatic activity of streptomycin are dissociated phenomena.
