Abstract
56, 44, and 46 expts. were made with medomin, seconal Na and phenobarbital Na, respectively, on excised perfused frog hearts. The barbiturates were freshly dissolved in Ringer''s soln. and were used in [image]/5000-[image]/500 concns. All 3 barbiturates decreased the height and rate of contractions of the perfused isolated frog heart. In both respects seconal Na was twice as potent as medomin and medomin again twice as potent as phenobarbital sodium. The effect on the cardiac vagus nerve was studied in 25, 55, and 51 expts. with medomin, seconal Na, and phenobarbital Na, respectively, in isolated perfused turtle hearts. The concns. used were [image]/2000-[image]/100. All 3 barbiturates depressed the cardiac vagus and their potency ratio in this respect was the same as above. Keywords
