Abstract
In the animal test Hygroton (chlorthalidone) has, apart from an intensive and long-acting diuretic and saliuretic effect, no other pharmacological property. This drug must act on the renal tubules where the inhibition of Na reabsorption prevails. In hypertonic disease Hygroton leads to a strong reduction of blood pressure. The antidiuretic action of this saliuretic drug is also of importance in the treatment of diabetes insipidus. In the treatment of hydropsy there results a necessary interaction between the sodium retentive effect of corticosteroids and the natriuretic effect of diuretic agents also acting upon the tubules. Keywords
