Abstract
Rats whose kidneys were lead-shielded, and which received 500 rad x-irradiation to the remainder of the body, did not show the increase in mitotic activity normally found 2–3 days after unilateral nephrectomy. A drastic lowering of the mitotic level also resulted from a single day of food deprivation. Kidney mitotic activity is therefore affected through abscopal means. The level of mitotic activity was not always correlated with subsequent kidney hyperplasia. A direct effect of x-irradiation was demonstrated by lead-shielding the body and irradiating only the exteriorized kidney. Doses of 2000 rad and 4000 rad, but not 1000 rad, caused a decrease in body-growth, and a significantly reduced compensatory increase in kidney-weight and DNA-content.This publication has 10 references indexed in Scilit:
